Extending thresholds, enhancing sonic qualities of environment (the experience of passing from the sidewalk to the interior of the proposed building)… a steel ‘bridge’ set into the paving resonates under one’s feet, loudest at the door threshold, but also extending into the sidewalk paving.

A curved door collects street sound and focuses it at the person entering.

Thinking about how to create continuity (through materials, modifying the facade of the kindergarten) between the existing building and the proposed structure.

Inspired by Martin Arnold’s Passage a l’Acte and Piece Touchee, I recorded interactions with a door, and then filmed over the video as I manipulated the clip later. Trying to reveal the geometry of the threshold of door interactions, and observe micro behaviors…

Inspired by Harry Bertoia’s sounding sculpture, the door battens act as a knocker, rendering the veneer itself a soundboard, and the door itself an instrument of sorts…

-how to record, analyze knocking? – using paint to make prints of ‘knocks’; recording with audio recorder (sound of knock from same side of door as knock; sound of knock from behind the door – more resonance behind the exposed part of the door!) and with piezo mics (vibration); with piezo mics in different locations on door (directly behind knock on other side of veneer; on the side of the batten behind the knock; on the front of the batten behind the knock…)

recording from same side of knocking:

sound of knocking on door recorded from same side as knocking by jayne.e

recording from side opposite knocking (behind the exposed part of door, knocking on front of door):

sound of knocking on door recorded from opposite side of knocking by jayne.e

piezo recording of knocking with piezo placed behind knock, on opposite side of veneer by jayne.e

piezo recording of knocking with piezo placed on the side of the batten, behind knock by jayne.e

-experimenting with material for diaphragms (paper, rawhide, rubber, metal)

made a frame, hung a door…

thinking about how to make a door instrumental; audio-spatial perception…

thinking about the relationship between the wooden flush door (now opened) and a guitar; toured a luthier’s studio

making a connection between Russolo’s intonarumori and the hurdy gurdy:

avoid making just an accessory to the door – http://www.runnerduck.com/door_harp.htm – rather, integrate! actuated by door mechanics; specific.

-thinking about how to design for door accurately and conveniently, at 1:1 (since door is in a different room than studio); using trace paper to trace parts needed –
